About Us

Why Alpaca?

Alpaca fiber is a luxury fiber that rivals the finest Cashmere and Merino wool. It is sorted into 22 natural colors and can easily be dyed. It is extremely fine in fiber diameter with little guard hair and very narrow scale on the individual fiber (cuticle) rendering it very high in "comfort factor"...just touch it against your cheek. It also has a very lustrous, silky sheen.

It has higher tensile strength, is warmer with better insulating properties and also more abrasion resistant than Merino wool.

It is important to note that it contains no lanolin and is hypo-allergenic. This is a fiber that truly produces heirloom apparel. If you think "green", think alpaca...it is an environmentally sensitive product and a renewable resource.

We at Renaissance Ridge Alpacas are committed not only to establishing the best breeding stock that we can, but also promoting the wonderful

properties of this elite fiber. Our mission is not just to contribute to the genetics of the future, but to spotlight the quality of the end product. If the response in our Sutter Creek, California is any indication, the future of the industry is bright indeed.

Economic benefits...

Even the small breeder has an opportunity to benefit from their alpaca venture.

For the foreseeable future, the industry remains, breeding focused , allowing breeders of any size to set their goals as broadly or narrowly as they desire while enjoying a very rewarding lifestyle.

The tax code allows for a $500K asset placed into service effective 2008 with$250K being expensed under Section 179and $250K remaining to be depreciated.

All the while your herd is growing!

Lifestyle benefits...

...cannot be underestimated. There is rarely a bad day spent with alpacas. Whether in the showring or the pastures, even the uninitiated can in short order become involved with livestock management. The community of breeders is vibrant and enthusiastic almost 25 years after alpacas were introduced into North America, with an active National Organization (AOBA) and affiliates thoughout the states.

Alpacas are socially friendly, even if perhaps not "huggable" with an intense curiosity. They appeal to kids who will find pleasure in halter and obstacle training through to adults who are looking for a source of income and interest outside of their traditional occupation. Considering that many of us will have over two decades after retirement, it is a vital and stimulating way to stay active, connected and at the same time provide an ongoing source of income.
